The Issue

Overview

We are Missouri parents, coaches, and community members calling for meaningful reform in youth sports tournament practices to better align with the core purpose of recreational and competitive youth sports: serving children, supporting families, and strengthening communities.

This petition is not intended to criticize or target any specific organization. Many tournament operators, facilities, and governing bodies provide valuable opportunities for young athletes. Instead, this is a request for system-wide reflection and improved standards to ensure that youth sports remain accessible, fair, and sustainable for families across Missouri.

Youth sports play an essential role in developing teamwork, discipline, and character. However, rising and inconsistent costs across tournaments are creating financial barriers for many families, limiting participation and putting increasing strain on community involvement.

These concerns are not limited to one sport. Similar fee structures—including tournament entry fees, gate admission charges, lodging requirements, concession policies, and unclear refund practices—are being reported across multiple youth sports such as baseball, basketball, softball, volleyball, and soccer in Missouri and surrounding regions.

Current Cost Structure Reported by Families

Across many youth sports tournaments, families commonly encounter the following types of fees:

- Team entry fees that can range from several hundred dollars up to approximately $1,000–$1,400 per tournament, depending on age group, location, and organization

- Gate admission fees for families and spectators, often structured as approximately $10 per day or weekend passes

- Additional costs such as travel, lodging, and concessions

- “Game guarantee” formats (such as 3–4 game minimums) that may not always be fulfilled due to weather or scheduling disruptions

Concern Regarding Gate Fees and Rainouts

Families frequently purchase daily or weekend gate passes in advance in order to attend games.

In some cases:

- When weather-related rainouts or schedule changes occur, gate passes may not be refunded or credited

- Families may still pay full spectator costs even when the number of games attended is significantly reduced

- Combined with entry fees, this creates uncertainty about what is being paid for versus what is actually delivered

Concern Regarding Game Guarantees and Refund Policies

Many tournaments advertise a minimum number of guaranteed games. However, when weather or other disruptions occur:

- Some tournaments do not consistently provide refunds or offer only partial credits

- Families may pay full or near-full entry fees even if fewer games are played than originally advertised

- Refund and cancellation policies vary widely and are not always clearly communicated at the time of registration

Concern Regarding Travel and Lodging Requirements

In some Missouri out-of-town youth sports tournaments, teams are required to use designated hotel booking partners or housing links as part of participation requirements. These “stay-to-play” style policies are more common in larger travel and showcase tournaments and may limit families’ ability to independently choose lodging options.

While group rates may sometimes be offered, families report that this structure can increase overall travel costs and reduce flexibility when planning tournament participation.

Concern Regarding Concessions and Outside Food Policies

In some tournament venues, outside food and beverages are restricted, requiring families to rely on on-site concessions. While this is common at many sporting facilities, families report that limited outside food access combined with higher concession pricing can contribute to the overall financial burden of attending multi-day tournaments.

System Structure and Community Impact

The youth sports tournament landscape is increasingly shaped by a limited number of large operators, circuits, and sanctioning organizations. While these organizations play an important role in providing competitive opportunities, the lack of consistent standards across the system can lead to wide variation in pricing, requirements, and overall cost burden for families.

This petition encourages a broader review of how youth sports tournaments are structured to ensure that the system remains aligned with its core purpose: serving children, supporting families, and strengthening community participation in sports.

Impact on Families

These combined costs can result in:

- Financial strain for families with multiple children in sports

- Reduced participation or families opting out of tournaments due to cost

- Unequal access to youth sports based on income rather than athletic ability or commitment

- Difficulty for families to budget due to inconsistent and unclear pricing structures

- Limited participation opportunities for grandparents and extended family members due to recurring gate admission costs

Grandparents are often among the most dedicated supporters of youth sports, regularly attending games to watch their grandchildren compete. However, for those on fixed or limited incomes, recurring gate admission fees and weekend pass costs can create financial barriers to attendance, limiting their ability to participate in these important family moments.

Personal Context

This issue is personal to our family because we are actively involved in youth sports. My husband coaches travel baseball for our two sons as a volunteer without pay, and we also have two children participating. Like many families, we experience these costs directly and understand the financial impact they place on parents.

Request

We respectfully call for meaningful reform in youth sports tournament practices to support greater consistency, transparency, and long-term affordability for families.

We are requesting the following actions:

1. Transparent Fee Disclosure

Require tournament organizers to clearly disclose all expected costs prior to registration, including entry fees, gate fees, and any additional charges.

2. Clear Communication of Game Guarantees

Standardize how “minimum games” or “game guarantee” formats are defined and communicated, including what occurs when weather or scheduling disruptions prevent completion.

3. Consistent Refund and Credit Policies

Require that refund or credit policies for entry fees and gate passes be clearly stated prior to registration and consistently applied across tournaments.

4. Family Cost Transparency Review

Encourage tournament organizers and governing bodies to regularly review pricing structures in relation to overall family financial burden, with the goal of maintaining accessibility and fairness across youth sports.

Closing

This petition is not intended to target any specific organization. It is a call for meaningful reflection, consistency, and improved transparency in youth sports tournament operations so that participation remains accessible to families of all income levels.

It is time to do better for our children, our families, and our communities. Youth sports should bring people together and remain rooted in opportunity, development, and community connection. We believe every child deserves equal access, opportunity, and fairness in the games they love.
