I have presented the signed petition and comments to the county legislature during the recent public hearing about proposed county law 1309 of 2016, which would have reformulated all lawn fertilizers sold or used in Suffolk - reducing the water soluble nitrogen by 75%. The legislation was introduced by Legislator Bill Lindsay III and is now in committee. The proposed law faces significant resistance from fertilizer manufacturers and professional landscapers and is unlikely to be adopted in its original form, but it's a start, and your voice has been added to the discussion. Having delivered the petition and your comments to the legislature (and to your individual legislator if you're a Suffolk resident), I have elected to close out the petition. The effort to address the problem of nitrogenous runoff from lawn fertilizers, however, is far from over and we will continue to press this issue on the legislative front and on other fronts. Nitrogen pollution in all its forms is, as per the County Executive, "public water enemy #1." We have moved the football forward on this important issue. Thank you for your support.
