Last Thursday, during the Olathe School District Board meeting, our community was devastated to learn that Walnut Grove Elementary is among the schools recommended for closure. This decision has not only shocked but also deeply saddened the multitude of families and educators who are integral to our school community. We strongly believe that closing Walnut Grove is a grave mistake, and we are calling on the Board to reconsider before making a final decision.

The proposal to close Walnut Grove overlooks the significant role our school plays in the community. For decades, Walnut Grove has been more than just a school; it's a hub where families connect, where children's lifelong friendships begin, and where generations have thrived academically and socially. It is home to teachers committed to nurturing every child's potential and ensuring they have a strong foundation for their educational journey. Rich history and culture aren't built overnight. We are calling on the board to provide more transparency on why Walnut Grove is viable for closure before we can align to their recommendations as tax-paying, active members of their constituency. 

Statistics have shown that neighborhood schools like Walnut Grove contribute significantly to local economy stability and community identity. A study by the National Education Policy Center found that school closures can adversely impact local economies by reducing property values and disrupting community ties. The decision to close our school would not only affect the students currently enrolled but would also have lasting negative effects on future students and the community at large.

We fully understand that the Olathe School District is facing financial challenges, yet we believe that closing Walnut Grove is not the solution. We urge the district to explore alternative cost-saving measures that do not compromise the quality and accessibility of education for our children. Transparency in the decision-making process and actively involving the community in these discussions could lead to innovative strategies that preserve the integrity of all local schools.

What we’re asking of the Olathe School District:

• Why this volume of schools: The task force suggested 3, and up to a maximum of 4, schools for closure. This was supported by the maximum amount of school staffs that the district could reasonably re-home. We want to understand why that number shifted when the taskforce was reduced to the much smaller steering committee. 
• Why these schools: Complete transparency with data/statistics/information to illuminate the rationale of the specific schools that were selected for recommended closure.
• Why this timeline: To extend their timeline for more community engagement. There is an imbalance of the information that has been shared and it’s unreasonable to ask their tax-paying constituents to support decisions that are not transparent. It’s also unreasonable to close this collection of schools so quickly, when the previously shared school closures far extend beyond this timeline. This is a permanent decision, with traumatic effects on the children impacted. This is not acceptable.
• Larger implications and forward-planning: Transparency on how boundaries would adjust with these closures - we do not believe the information the OSD has provided to date is comprehensive or acceptable. It is not enough to ask us to trust their decision making without information on what will actually happen to our children and staff.

We cannot stand by and let this happen without a fight. It's time to rally together and show the Olathe School District just how much Walnut Grove means to us and why it must remain open.
