Dec 18, 2025

Two weeks ago an avalanche of outrage followed the State Government announcement of plans to absorb VicHealth into the Department of Health.

In just 14 days:

  • 4,850 people added their names to this change.org/SaveVicHealth petition
  • 350+ people signed the open letter to Keep VicHealth Independent, delivered to the Premier.
  • 2,245 people are connecting with with Friends of VicHealth on LinkedIn.
  • 300 profiles are engaging with @SaveVicHealth on Instagram.
  • The SaveVicHealth.org website went live.
  • VicHealth featured in dozens of media stories, from national and regional radio to TV bulletins, independent media, and major mastheads.
  • Organisations and individuals from diverse sectors including food systems, urban design, sports clubs, youth mental health, disability and women’s and youth wellbeing shared hundreds of powerful stories and statements.
  • Dozens (possibly hundreds) of letters and calls have reached MPs.
  • VicHealth was debated and discussed in both Houses of Parliament with representatives of the Greens and Liberals raising motions noting the contributions and value of VicHealth.

While the decision hasn't been rescinded, MPs are increasingly voicing their own concerns. This issue will not fade unless the Premier makes it, and there is still time before the summer break for the Government to change course. If it does not, we will persist: VicHealth is expected to be discussed again in the first Parliamentary sitting week of February 2026.

What’s Next?

This week we’ve shared tips on how Friends of VicHealth can take an extra step to help. If you haven’t yet:

  • Follow and engage on social media: LinkedIn (Friends of VicHealth) or Instagram (@savevichealth).
  • Write to or call your MP and/or the Premier. Even if your email sits unread or you reach voicemail, it creates an entry point to follow up in January. There are tips and templates in the ‘contact politicians page on savevichealth.org
  • Talk about VicHealth at your summer gatherings, discuss what it means to your community with friends and family. Encourage others to speak up and add their name and voice.

As we head into the summer break, 10 minutes of action now will help maintain momentum into 2026. When MPs return in January, there will be no time to lose.

While public comms will quieten down over the main summer holiday period, the campaign is not going away and with your help we will come back from early January rested and rejuvenated, even stronger, louder and more determined to keep VicHealth independent and strong. Keep gathering stories to share, talking to people about the value of VicHealth, and engaging with MPs.

Thank you for being part of such a strong and united community of Friends of VicHealth.

Wishing you peace, joy and health through the upcoming holiday period.

See you on the other side.
