Keep Velma Teague Library IN Murphy Park
The Issue
We ask that you sign this petition to add your support for keeping the Velma Teague Library IN Murphy Park. Help us protect this essential part of Glendale’s cultural and educational heritage.
Glendale citizens are deeply concerned about the proposed destruction and/or relocation of the Velma Teague Library, an essential community resource that has stood proudly in Murphy Park for decades. This library is more than just a building ~ it is a cornerstone of our city’s heritage and a beloved gathering place for individuals of all ages.
Why We Must Keep Velma Teague Library in Murphy Park:
- History: The Velma Teague Library has been an integral part of the Glendale community since its opening in 1971. Its unique location in historic Murphy Park, surrounded by beautiful green spaces, has made it a peaceful and welcoming environment for generations of Glendale residents and there has been a library in the center of historic Murphy Park since 1917.
- Community Hub: The library is a vital community hub, offering educational resources, public programs, and cultural events. Its accessibility within Murphy Park allows families, students, and seniors to easily reach its service.
- Proximity to Public Transit and Local Businesses: The current location of the Velma Teague Library is easily accessible via public transportation, making it a crucial resource for residents who rely on buses, bicycles or walking. Additionally, the library supports the vibrancy of downtown Glendale, attracting foot traffic that benefits local businesses.
- Green Spaces Matter: Moving the library out of and away from historic Murphy Park would disrupt the balance of community spaces in our city. The library and park work hand-in-hand to provide a safe, family-friendly area where residents can read, relax, and enjoy outdoor activities in one central location.
- Cultural and Educational Impact: Relocating or demolishing Velma Teague Library would negatively impact the community’s access to its varried programs – from children’s storytime to adult literacy workshops. These programs are especially vital in supporting underserved populations in the area.
We strongly urge city officials and decision-makers to reconsider any plans to demolish and/ or relocate the Velma Teague Library. We believe that with thoughtful planning, the library can be renovated and preserved in its current location. Murphy Park and Velma Teague Library are part of our shared identity, and keeping them together is crucial to maintaining Glendale’s community spirit.
What We Propose -
1. Prioritize renovation over relocation, ensuring that the library continues to serve future generations.
2. Increase funding for library maintenance and improvements, keeping Velma Teague Library in line with modern needs while preserving its history & character.
3. Engage the community in discussions about the future of Velma Teague Library, ensuring that public input is a central part of any decision-making process.
By signing this petition, we show that together we can preserve Velma Teague Library in its rightful home!
