It’s time for an update regarding the current status of library and what better way to let all the Keep Velma Teague Library IN Murphy Park supporters informed than to hear it from a City of Glendale Councilmember. We are pleased to share a segment, used with permission, from the July 11, 2025 newsletter of Cactus District Councilmember Lupe Conchas, who has been a vocal supporter of keeping and renovating this important local treasure.
"Dear neighbors,
As your Councilmember, I want to be transparent with you about an important conversation happening at City Hall: the future of the Velma Teague Library in Murphy Park.
At our most recent City Council workshop on June 24th, we reviewed three possible options
- Keep the current library building & renovate it.
- Build a brand-new library structure within Murphy Park.
- Demolish the current library and move it out of the park entirely.
Let me be clear — I do not support removing the Velma Teague Library from Murphy Park. This library has been a cornerstone of our community and downtown Glendale for generations. It belongs where families can easily access it, where community events thrive, and where memories are made.
That said, no final decision has been made. There is currently no consensus from the City Council on which option to pursue. That’s why your voice matters now more than ever.
Most residents I’ve spoken with agree that the library should stay in the park. But I’ve also heard from a few of you who have different perspectives, and I welcome that. Whether you’re for renovation, new construction, or have concerns about the current location, I want to hear from you.
I will continue bringing your ideas, questions, and feedback to my colleagues and to city staff. But I also encourage you to get involved directly: attend public meetings, email your thoughts, and let us know what this space means to you.
The future of Velma Teague is about more than just bricks and mortar — it’s about how we value learning, access, and community. Let’s shape that future together.
In service,
Councilmember Lupe Conchas, Cactus District – City of Glendale"
