The Issue

United Airlines is planning to discontinue its nonstop Newark (EWR)–Lima (LIM) service after March 26, 2027. This decision would eliminate an important nonstop connection between the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area and Peru, affecting thousands of travelers, families, and the large Peruvian-American community in the region.

The Newark–Lima route is an important connection between the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area and Peru. It serves Peruvian families, business travelers, tourists, students, and many others who rely on convenient nonstop service between the United States and Peru.

The New York and New Jersey metropolitan area is home to a large and well-established Peruvian-American community. For many families, this route provides a direct connection to relatives, cultural ties, business opportunities, tourism, and Peru.

According to recent U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) market data cited in aviation industry reports, 98,366 passengers traveled round-trip on the Newark–Lima market during the 12 months through May 2026, with a reported 89.3% load factor. These numbers demonstrate strong demand for this nonstop connection.

United has indicated that it regularly adjusts its network based on factors such as demand, seasonality, and other market considerations. We understand that airlines must make difficult decisions about their networks. However, we respectfully ask United to reconsider the Newark–Lima decision and evaluate the continued demand for nonstop service from the New York/New Jersey market.

Adding additional Lima service through Houston does not provide an equivalent alternative for passengers who live in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area. Connecting through another airport adds travel time and inconvenience, particularly for families, elderly travelers, children, and passengers who travel frequently between the United States and Peru.

We respectfully ask United Airlines to:

Reconsider the planned discontinuation of the nonstop EWR–LIM route.
Review the route’s passenger demand and long-term potential in the New York/New Jersey market.
Consider maintaining at least one daily nonstop flight between Newark and Lima.
Engage with the Peruvian-American community and local stakeholders before permanently removing this important international connection.
We are not asking United to ignore market realities. We are asking United to listen to the customers and communities that depend on this route and reconsider whether Newark–Lima truly needs to be eliminated.

Please keep nonstop Newark–Lima service.

Keep EWR–LIM. Keep our communities connected.
