Keep TikTok -- Protect National Security Without Sacrificing Opportunity

Keep TikTok -- Protect National Security Without Sacrificing Opportunity
The Issue
The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA), which will take effect January 19, 2025, aims to ban foreign-controlled apps like TikTok in order to address national security concerns. While national security is highly important, we believe this law is not the best way to achieve that goal.
We, the undersigned, ask our federal officials to find better solutions—ones that keep Americans safe while protecting American freedoms of expression, income, small businesses, and global relationships. Banning an app like TikTok could lead to serious problems for the United States, including:
- Economic Harm: More than 150 million Americans use TikTok to support their businesses, creativity, income, and entertainment. Banning the application in the United States will harm the American economy and disrupt the lives of its citizens in multiple ways.
- Strained Global Relationships: A national ban as it stands could damage U.S. diplomatic ties, hurt international trade relationships, and lead to retaliatory actions or policies from other nations.
- Limits on Free Expression: Popular platforms like TikTok allow people to express themselves, share ideas, and build digital communities. Such a ban could not only limit free expression for tens of millions of American citizens, but also set a dangerous precedent for restricting access to other foreign-owned platforms in the future, undermining digital rights.
We understand the need for national protection, but we believe there are smarter, more balanced solutions to safeguard Americans and their data. We ask lawmakers to consider options like:
- Strengthening data security regulations for all social media applications, whether they are foreign or American-owned.
- Holding the owning parties of applications more accountable by requiring increased transparency about how apps handle user data.
- Encouraging or installing better internet service technology to protect American user information without banning useful, popular, or beneficial platforms.
This petition is nonpolitical, and is not intended to align itself with any political agenda. It simply asks our federal government, namely Congress and the Supreme Court, to oppose, reconsider, and if necessary repeal this act of legislation in favor of common-sense long-term solutions that balance national security risks while protecting freedom and opportunity for American citizens.
Sign this petition to urge our federal government to halt the implementation of PAFACA, and work toward safer, smarter alternatives that balance national security and the freedoms of American citizens.
