The Issue
The semester system means Thomas Haney Secondary won't be self-paced anymore. This shift means splitting half of your subjects into one half of the year, overburdening students with specific subjects. Thomas Haney won't be the same school anymore as it is known to be. People like me and many others loved the linear system as it helps us self-pace, allowing us to get ahead or seek support in certain subjects. We need to get the district to realize what we want.
At Thomas Haney Secondary, the linear system has been instrumental in providing students with the flexibility to manage their studies effectively. The ability to spread courses throughout the year allows students to balance their workload, focus on a wide array of subjects simultaneously, and develop time management skills that will serve them well in higher education and beyond. The shift to a semester system could disrupt this balance, leading to increased stress and decreased educational satisfaction.
Research suggests that a linear system can contribute significantly to student success, particularly for those who thrive in self-directed and continuous learning environments. It affords students the opportunity to build long-term relationships with their teachers, fostering mentorships and personalized support. The educational experience at Thomas Haney should remain unique and tailored to the needs of its student body.
Moreover, maintaining a linear schedule allows the school to preserve its identity and uphold the values and successes that have been built over the years. Implementing a semester system threatens to undermine the educational principles that have set Thomas Haney apart.
I urge the Maple Ridge School District to consider the voices of its students and parents. Let us preserve the quality of education that Thomas Haney is renowned for by maintaining the linear system. Sign this petition to show your support for keeping Thomas Haney a beacon of student-centered learning.
