The Issue

We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the NC 4th of July Parade Committee reconsider the recent enforcement banning the distribution of candy, T-shirts, and other items along the parade route.

For generations, catching candy and giveaways has been a beloved tradition and a highlight of the Southport 4th of July Parade. These small moments of joy—especially for children—are what make our parade feel personal, festive, and community-driven. Whether it’s a child catching a piece of candy or a local proudly wearing a free commemorative T-shirt, these experiences create lifelong memories and build deeper connections between businesses and the community they serve.

We fully understand and support the committee’s concern for public safety. However, we believe that there are safe and reasonable alternatives to a full ban, such as:

  • Allowing only walking participants to hand out or gently toss items
  • Encouraging underhand or soft tosses of lightweight items
  • Stationing volunteers to help ensure safety protocols are followed

This event is a cornerstone of our town’s summer and a reflection of our values as a community. We believe that with thoughtful planning and cooperation, we can uphold both safety and tradition—ensuring that the Southport 4th of July Parade continues to be a magical experience for all.

We urge you to open this policy up for discussion with the community and consider a solution that prioritizes both joy and safety.

Sincerely,
Jessie Mack
