The Issue

Our mornings begin on Wareham Road, a place full of bustling activity and, unfortunately, danger. As a parent and resident of Lytchett Matravers, I am deeply concerned for the safety of our children who attend Lytchett Matravers Primary School. Each day, our lollipop lady stands as a beacon of safety, ushering our young ones safely across this perilous stretch, filled with speeding vehicles and distracted drivers.

Recently, Dorset County Council opted to remove this invaluable resource, believing the newly installed zebra crossing would suffice. However, many road users fail to adhere to the rules regarding this crossing. It isn't just a painted path; it requires vigilance that simply cannot be guaranteed without the watchful eyes of our dedicated lollipop lady.

Statistics reveal a concerning reality; according to local reports, specific rules at pedestrian crossings are neglected by drivers at an alarming rate. Nationally, it’s estimated that half of all pedestrian accidents happen on road crossings. Without our lollipop lady, the risks increase significantly.

Removal of this position isn’t just an operational change—it’s a safety hazard. We can’t allow a zebra crossing to replace the human touch and authority our children so desperately need for their safety. The sight of our lollipop lady, ensuring every child receives safe passage, is not just routine security; it’s an essential service that cannot be overlooked.

The solution is simple. Dorset County Council must reconsider their decision and reinstate the lollipop lady at Lytchett Matravers Primary School. This position holds more than the symbol of safety; it is crucial for maintaining the well-being of our children.

Please join us in making our voices heard. Stand with us to ensure the safety of our children. Sign this petition to keep our lollipop lady and continue to safeguard our community’s future. Together, we can make a difference.
