The Issue

The La Junta High School Pool, located in Otero County, Colorado, is an invaluable asset to the community and is at risk of being closed due to funding.

It is the only year-round pool available within a 60-mile radius and has served as an essential resource to the community for years.

It has significant outreach. Patrons from all cities in Otero County, Las Animas County, Bent County, Prowers County, Crowley County, and Pueblo County utilize the pool daily. Losing this resource would have devastating effects on those who depend on it for their communal connection and fitness needs.

Without this pool, many seniors, adults, teens, and young children will lose their primary source of regular exercise, potentially leading to public health implications.

Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlight the essential benefits of swimming, not only as a fun activity but as a vital component of maintaining physical health. Swimming regularly can decrease the risk of chronic illnesses. It is an exercise that is accessible to people of all ages and physical capabilities.

The pool serves as a safe environment, always prioritizing water safety, and it provides an affordable recreational activity. A place for families to spend time together, and for youth to learn to swim early in life, reducing the risk of drownings in this area.

There are actionable steps we can take to keep this community asset alive. We are seeking possible state funding to keep the pool from closing and we urge local authorities to explore alternative funding or grants that could alleviate financial strains.

This pool is vital to our community's health, economy, and unity. Let’s join together to preserve a space that means so much to so many.

Please sign this petition to keep the local indoor pool open for the community. Your support can make a tremendous difference.
