Greetings Keewatin Supporters,
The first snow has fallen, which means that the SS Keewatin will remain for another winter where she belongs... in Port McNicoll. The winter season is too dangerous for her to travel, and many locks along the seaway close during the season.
Our efforts continue to keep Keewatin home! We learned from local residents that an engineering crew recently visited the vessel on behalf of the Kingston museum and raised concerns about the condition of the ship for transport. This has been our contention for some time - that the vessel is not safe to leave Port McNicoll. At the same time, we have a team of qualified and experienced engineers (many with time on Keewatin) who have indicated that should the doors be unlocked by Skyline, they are ready to work on board the ship at a moment's notice.
The Canadian Museum of Water, in the meantime, continues to gain traction with local, national, and international partners. There was a great interest in the CMW at the UNESCO endorsed Global Network of Water Museums conference in Morocco last month, and next week we will be sending a virtual delegation to the Ontario Museum Association conference. We also continue to solidify local partners in our growing project.
Signs - ground signs can be retrieved and stored for the winter, then returned in the spring; thank you for continuing to display lawn and window signs in support of our campaign. When we first began, none of us expected that we would have a sign in the ground (or window) for two years! However, signs make a big difference. Each day the signs remind locals that we are still very much in this fight. At the same time, prominent visitors and politicians come to our community and see the multitude of signs and understand how important it is to us that we save the ship.
So... keep the faith, we have the tools and the support to win this fight and remember that time is now on our side. Thank you again for your continuing support!
