A high school image is causing controversy in the Little Apple.  A image that has been a tradition of the school going on 75 years now.

The Manhattan Indians.

But a symbol a few community members aren’t comfortable with.

Now one group of Manhattan residents feels the high school mascot falls in that category and needs to be changed.

The Indian image isn’t meant to be derogatory. In fact it has evolved in recent years to serve as symbol of honor.

The latest image was even designed by a faculty member. Brent Yancey an enrolled member of the Citizen Band Potawatomi Tribe and retired MHS Art teacher.

The school also did away with this Indian image head-dress and some costumes twirlers for the band used to wear at games.

We need the communities help holding the school boards feet to the fire.

In 2016, the school board voted, 7-0, to KEEP the Indian image at MHS. We need to make sure they stand by their decision to keep the Indian image.
