Dear Friends of the Greene Tract Forest: Thank you for engaging in the important conversation about the future of the Greene Tract. Together, we made a difference. With our help, the principles of the community’s 2016 report "Rogers Road: Mapping our Community’s Future" have been reaffirmed, with shared goals of meeting community housing needs, connectivity, and preservation of the sensitive and distinctive natural resources of the Greene Tract. The Chapel Hill Town Council has agreed to move forward with a formal and independent environmental assessment of the property, as well as a connectivity study. These will be important in future planning efforts. It is expected that Orange County and Carrboro will sign on shortly and that the studies will be completed by the end of the year. There will be extensive community participation in the planning process. Most importantly, our efforts, along with others’, have served to restore the voice of the community in this important conversation. We are working to create a process with the Rogers Road Community and other direct neighbors of the Greene Tract to work together to achieve our shared goals and interests for this important property. Thanks to each of you who signed our petition, joined our Facebook group, attended community meetings, talked with neighbors, and supported the cause. The support from more than 700 people shows that the future of the Greene Tract is an important issue that deserves serious attention and transparency. It worked! We are now closing this petition and focusing our support, along with other direct neighbors of the Greene Tract, to reinstate the "Mapping our Community’s Future" process. We will keep people apprised of progress and important meetings via the Friends of the Greene Tract Forest Facebook page.
