The 164-acre Greene Tract, purchased in 1984 and jointly owned by Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Orange County, is an important community resource. Over the years, resident and town efforts to plan for the use of the property have recommended at least 80% of the property be reserved for forest preservation and parkland use. This was the conclusion of the 2002 Greene Tract Work Group Report and the 2016 Rogers Road: Mapping our Community’s Future report. Both were developed over months of hard collaborative work by town and county residents and elected officials.

Now Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Orange County are moving to significantly reduce this 80% preservation goal with new development guidelines that would allow far more development on the property and far less of the property to be preserved as natural forest and parkland. We ask that years of community planning efforts be respected and at least 80% of the Greene Tract be preserved for community recreation and enjoyment.
