Keep the Evergreen State College pool open

Keep the Evergreen State College pool open
The Issue
The entire aquatic community in Thurston, Lewis, and Mason counties revolves around the Evergreen State College pool, and we NEED it to stay open! This facility is not just a pool; it's a vital part of our community fabric, offering a safe, healthy environment for everyone—from competitive swimmers, to water aerobics enthusiasts, to families learning to swim together. The pool is where lifelong skills are developed, friendships are forged, and countless memories are made.
We serve a wide range of community groups including four local schools, children learning to swim, senior citizens, and those just looking to swim for exercise, making it a multi-functional space essential for many. Without this pool, these groups would face significant challenges in finding alternative venues to meet their needs. Thurston County already has LESS pools than it did 30 years ago! Our community's health and well-being depend on having access to such a comprehensive aquatic facility.
Data from the National Swimming Pool Foundation specifies the vast mental and physical health benefits that community members gain from such access, including lower stress levels, improved cardiovascular health, and enhanced social interaction—all indispensable to our social and community fabric.
We understand that operational costs are a challenge, but closing the pool is not the solution. We propose that the college explores other avenues for revenue, such as increasing memberships, hosting regular aquatic events, and seeking partnerships or sponsorships from local businesses and organizations. Studies have shown that community pools can become sustainable through strategic marketing and fundraising efforts.
Our pool not only fosters individual excellence and community pride, but keeps our county connected. For these reasons, we urge the Evergreen State College administration to reconsider the decision and keep this invaluable resource open for all.
Please add your signature to our petition to make it clear that this facility is necessary for our community's well-being and vibrancy. Every signature counts, and together, we can preserve this essential service for future generations.
