The Issue

The Dorsett Hill Haunt isn't just any event; it's a beloved community tradition in our area for nearly 12 years! This year, however, we face an unexpected challenge that threatens to close our beloved haunt due to just one formal complaint about traffic. In response, a cease and desist order has been issued against us, putting a halt to the festivities many of us look forward to every Halloween season.

Our haunt is well-known for its community spirit and generosity. We have always operated on a donations-only basis, offering a thrilling and enjoyable experience to everyone without any entry fee. What's more, every year, the funds we collect go back into our local community, supporting various initiatives and enhancing our neighborhoods. This event is much more than just fun; it's about community building and giving back.

We have been proactive and responsive regarding the complaint about traffic. Last year, when we first heard of potential issues, we immediately made adjustments for parking. The plan was implemented just a week after submission, showcasing our commitment to addressing concerns and improving our operations.

Despite this, our attempts to work with the local authorities and come up with viable solutions have been met with silence. We have reached out, eager for dialogue and collaboration to ensure that both the event can continue and any concerns are resolved amicably, yet we have found little support.

Our community stands at a crossroads. The decision to close The Dorsett Hill Haunt not only impacts those who enjoy the spooky fun but also affects our community’s spirit of giving and togetherness. We are more than willing to work hand in hand with officials to resolve any issues.

We need your help to show the local authorities how important The Dorsett Hill Haunt is to us all. By signing this petition, you're supporting our cause to keep the haunt alive, uphold our community values, and ensure continued donations to local causes. Please sign and help us save The Dorsett Hill Haunt!

“Thank you for reaching out. The issue here is that any event, which they are now considered, must have 20 or more acres and the Chamness’s only have 5 acres. The proper permits cannot be issued due to the lack of acreage. If Mr Chamness can find a property with 20 plus acres to move the event to where it would also not affect the neighbors, we would be able to consider the permit. There are other events in Cass County that are held to these same conditions. We are unable to allow a permit to Mr Chamness unless he can move his event to a property of 20 acres or more. Also, the 20 acres + special use permit allows parking on the property, not on the road and it also provides set backs away from neighboring properties etc. Plus other safety things to provide a safe space for all involved. I am aware for all, the 20 acres and SUP is not an easy fix but to move forward it is the only way from my understanding of codes. [Note: The Change.org Civic Engagement Team reaches out to decision makers to let them know about petitions in their community and to help facilitate engagement with supporters. The above was an email response we received regarding this petition.]”
