Keep the Disc, Lower Prices: Tell Sony To Keep Gamers in mind!
The Issue
On July 1, 2026, Sony announced it will end production of physical discs for all new PlayStation games starting January 2028. New games will be sold digitally, or as a box containing only a download code, with no disc inside. Days earlier, Grand Theft Auto VI confirmed it will launch with no disc at all. When the market leader ends the disc, the rest of the industry follows.
Since then, there has been an uproar in the community about how much PlayStation doesn't listen to the community anymore. They just see us as money bags instead of their consumer that we are. I think it's time we make them listen.
The Who: Sony.
The What? Sony's Prices hiking up, that we don't own and digital games we buy and the Removal of Physical Media.
The When? From September 7th - Until they listen to us.
The Where? Everywhere that we can do so.
The Why? By Removing the Physical Media of games and hiking the prices of Digital Media and then making it so we don't own the games we purchase digital, removes the ownership that came with Physical Media to the point where removing it would only make up rent digital media as we don't own it. Also hiking up the prices of a subscription based service that removes games on whims showing us that we don't own them even more.
The How? We take the fight to them by rejecting their prices and rejecting the removal of physical media. For the rest of the year and the rest of 2027, we can bring attention to this by avoiding buying any games digital through the PSN Store and by Unsubscribing, Downgrading or just avoiding getting it all together, we can force their hand to bring down PS+ Subscriptions prices, to bring down Digital Media prices, to Keep Physical Media in stores.
Even if you can't participate in the strike fully just try as long as you can to not purchase anything from the PSN store or pre-ordering any digital games. There was a blackout going on from August 23rd to the 30th and whilst it was only a week it was still able to bring attention to Sony's CEO, even though we barely made a dent in their prices due to people still doing what they want which is okay, the blackout still brought people together and brought attention to the plight that they are causing us gamers. If you want to be apart of this but know that your PlayStation is a crucial part of what gaming is to you and how you game, then just listen to the pillars, take steps to try and avoid getting anything from their PSN store, anything digital, currency or skins. Try and focus on getting them in person and from retailers that way we can show that Physical Media is just as important as getting Digital.
The Pillars
Pillar 1: Minimal Play - Keeping Playtime from Low to None. What this means; is to keep the play time on your PS Consoles to an all time low that you can do. Whether that is taking time doing other past-times or just letting the day go by. I know that some people use their PS to pass the time, to unwind off of work or just hang out with friends to be social but what if maybe instead you do something else and only try to play for a few hours rather than all day. Minimizing your time playing games will help us bring attention to our cause.
Pillar 2: No Game Purchases - Unless Physical Media. What this means; is that any current digital pre-orders you have you should cancel or any you want in the future just focus on getting the physical editon using means such as gamestop or just shopping around the physical medias instead of purchasing or preordering that game through the PSN store this way they don't get the money from our pre-orders.
Pillar 3: Ignore PSN Store. What this means; abstaining from purchasing anything in the PSN store whether that be skins for a game or currency, the only thing you should be purchasing from the store and barely is the free PS+ games once a month and the free packs from the PS+ plus that you pay for.
Pillar 4: Unsubscribe, Downgrade or Skip Subscriptions What this means is; if you haven't used your Playstation in awhile and can go ahead with removing the subscription entirely do so. Also avoid games that require one and play games that let you play without being subscriped. Another point is to not upgrade at all, stay on the basic plan if you can, drop down to the lowest one if you can, it would help us drop the numbers of the PS+ subscribers and we can also tackle another issue of the over-priced PS+ subscriptions they have us paying.
Pillar 5: Do Not Purchase In-Game Credits, Battlepasses or Skins. What this means is; if you can avoid purchasing battlepasses through the PS store and avoid getting any type of game credits through the PS store or any anything through the store. If you can get them through other means such as getting Overwatch credits through the Battlenet or getting Fortnite bucks through an actual store. This way, we don't spend time in the PS store, getting things from them at all.
Pillar 6: Support Physical by Buying In Person through Retailers and Not Digitally from PSN. This is the whole point of this strike. We are striking or attempting to so we can keep disc going past 2028, getting our PS+ prices down instead of them being skyrockted and the price of games going back down to 60 instead of these prices of 70 and above and our PS+ coming down to good prices instead of the price gouging they are doing to give a library of games as they stated we don't own and they can remove them anytime they want.
