Keep the Capitals and Wizards out of Alexandria and in DC

The Issue

There are few things that people from Northern Virginia and Washington DC agree about, but one thing we are behind is keeping the Capital One Arena in Washington DC instead of moving it to Potomac Yards in Alexandria Virginia.

  1. Potomac Yards serves as a hub for shoppers in Alexandria including being home to a Target, the only Target in Alexandria City. Don't mess with our Target!
  2. Potomac Yards is right by Reagan National Airport, where there is already intense traffic. By moving the arena to Alexandria Virginia, traffic will further worsen, making it even more difficult for people to make their flights.
  3. Washington DC residents HATE traveling to Northern Virginia. Many DC residents will see it as a burden and fewer people will attend games based in Northern Virginia.
  4. The arena is a key part of vitalizing the existing neighborhood in DC, and by moving the arena it will upend people whose jobs depend on the arena's existence.
  5. Existing wetlands were already encroached on to make the Potomac Yards Metro station, by building a new stadium we are further destroying some of the limited wetlands we have.
  6. The Potomac Yards Metro Station does not have the capabilities to handle the influx of people visiting games. Metro was not contacted prior to this decision and states if the plans go through there will need to be further work done to an already brand new station.

Alexandria elected officials claim that there is no money or space in their budget for resources to handle issues locals care about. Imagine what our city would be like if we invested that proposed $10 billion into our public schools, public health or environmental resources.
