The Issue

Stop the city of Saskatoon from removing downtown benches!

This is a shortsighted, costly, offensive, and backwards decision.

The benches in downtown Saskatoon serve everyone and are more than just places to sit.

People deserve to occupy, and exist in public space no matter their societal position. For many people, particularly our seniors, young children, and those with mobility challenges, these benches are essential, providing necessary support and rest during their trips downtown. Removing them is not just an inconvenience; it is an exclusion of those who rely on them the most.

Don’t we want people to be downtown? Stay downtown?

Rather than addressing the existing challenges faced by our community—issues of housing, homelessness, addiction, mental health, and intergenerational poverty—removing benches merely shifts the focus away from seeking real solutions. Every moment and dollar spent on removing these benches could be better invested in programs and initiatives that actually address the root causes of these complex social issues.

Saskatoons downtown needs compassionate city planning.
