The Issue

For many residents of Douglasdale and neighbouring communities in Calgary's far Southeast, the cancellation of the 131 bus route threatens to impose significant hardships on daily life. I have personally experienced the vital role the 131 bus plays in facilitating my daily commute downtown. Once, we were served by three separate bus routes — 102, 103, and 133. However, these have now been condensed into the single 131 route, which regularly operates at full capacity with passengers standing in whatever space they can find.

The 131 bus is the only remaining reliable transit option available to us. Its removal would make commuting not just an inconvenience, but a daily ordeal. I have witnessed firsthand the anxiety and frustration this potential loss is causing in our community. For working professionals, students, seniors, and everyone else who relies on this bus, it's not just a matter of inconvenience but a necessity.

Public transit is a lifeline for many, providing access to work, education, healthcare, and other essential services. According to Calgary Transit’s own data, the usage of the 131 bus is substantial, indicating its critical importance to our community. Removing it would not only force many commuters into lengthy, unpredictable journeys but would also likely lead to increased traffic congestion and environmental impacts due to more cars on the road.

Instead of discontinuing this service, we urge Calgary Transit and the local government to consider alternative solutions that better serve our community's needs. Possible measures could include reinstating one of the previously retired routes or increasing the frequency of the existing 131 to alleviate overcrowding.

This is a call to those in charge to recognize and prioritize the needs of thousands of residents who depend on the 131 bus every day. We ask for your support in signing this petition to keep the 131 bus route operational and ensure that our community remains well-connected and accessible. Your signature could make a critical difference.
