Keep Space in MAE

Keep Space in MAE
The Issue
The Mechanical and Aerospace Department at the University of Strathclyde is moving to suspend one of the only two space-related courses currently offered: ME512 - Spaceflight Mechanics.
This decision comes as a deep disappointment to students and staff who have worked tirelessly to advance Strathclyde’s reputation as a serious player in the global space sector.
Through the tireless efforts of StrathSEDS (Strathclyde Students for the Exploration and Development of Space) and StrathAIS (Strathclyde Aerospace Innovation Society) - from the development of high-powered rocketry projects to the launch of STRATHcube, the university’s very own CubeSat - Strathclyde has made significant strides in elevating its profile in the UK and international space communities.
These student-led achievements demonstrate a clear demand and drive for space-related education. It is not only disheartening but fundamentally contradictory to dismiss this momentum by removing academic opportunities in the very area where our students and researchers are excelling.
We urge the university leadership and relevant departments to:
- Reconsider the suspension of the space module in question (ME512).
- Engage in an open dialogue with student groups and faculty involved in space projects.
- Recognise the importance of supporting academic pathways aligned with our extracurricular successes and industry trends.
The decision to cancel this course undermines years of dedication, innovation, and progress - not just from students, but from a University that has often claimed to be at the forefront of technological advancement.
Let’s not allow that progress to be undone.
