Keep Rockaway Beach OPEN to the Public - Summer 2022

Keep Rockaway Beach OPEN to the Public - Summer 2022
We are petitioning the NYC Parks Department, NYC Mayors Office and the Army Corps of Engineers to allow the beaches between 90th and 116th streets to remain open and lifeguarded throughout the entirety of Summer 2022.
We have just heard (from the Rockaway Wave post) that these beaches will be closed (with openings on weekends). There have been no formal announcements from any city or federal agencies as of this moment.
The purpose is to complete the construction on the new jetties. We believe this work can be wrapped up and put on hold until September.
Four out of the past five summers, Rockaway Beach businesses have suffered because of last-second limited or full closures. This seems to be the straw that will break the camels back, as many businesses do not have “just one more year” this time around.
We don't want our visitors this summer to be greeted with chain link fences keeping them off of the beach.
It is our elected officials making these decisions, and we believe the majority of their constituents would like to see these beaches and businesses open for possibly the first “normal” year in many.
We all understand that erosion control and jetties are necessary for Rockaways long term survival. We just hope these agencies can work with us to operate these projects in a way that also supports our local community and businesses in our most important season.
Please, in addition to signing this, contact Mayor Eric Adams, Senator Chuck Schumer, Congressman Gregory Meeks, NYC Parks Department, Army Corp of Engineers and everyone else with concerns!
