Keep religion out of school
Keep religion out of school
The Issue
The public has been made aware recently that they are planning on introducing LifeWise Academy to Pennfield School districts, to spread the word of God and his teachings to students.
While I can note that this would be voluntary for students to attend, it is still no place to be introduced at a public school. There are Christian schools, churches, and personal homes for the Word of God/God's teachings/the Bible to be taught.
If a parent or household is already religious, there is a good chance these practices are already in place. Attending Church on Sundays, Wednesday services, or even home.
Taking students out of the school, where they are there to learn math, science, history, English and other skills seems a bit ridiculous.
Unless the school plans to introduce and teach ALL religions to students, we cannot have just Christianity be the focus. Showing students that our school system favors one over several others. Which leads me to pointing out this goes directly against the 1st amendment.
It was ruled that state-sponsored prayer or religious instruction in public schools is unconstitutional. Teaching about religion in a objective, academic context is permissible. This means that Christianity can be included in curricula as part of history, literature, or cultural studies, but NOT as a faith based practice or doctrinal instruction.
As a mother of a Pennfield student, I would not want my kid or any other kids/families that are not overly religious or Christian by any means to be made to feel uncomfortable.
