The Issue
Berkely County Schools are trying to remove reading classes in grades 6 and up. At Spring Mills Middle School, we have discussed this concern and have agreed that what they are trying to do isn't right. The class they are trying to put in, Integrated language Arts, is a mix of everything involving English. This effects kids GPA's, end of year GSA's, and so much more. These kids don't have the love of reading already, taking away the one class that allows them to explore great books, some that have changed history, is setting up our generation and other generations to come for failure. Learning minutes are going to be lost. Kids will lose the knowledge for proper grammar and spelling basic words. It will also cause teachers to lose the job that they love. If they are already trying to take away core classes... what's coming next for us? Removing reading classes is like removing science or math. On top of all of this, they are trying to add more screen time into our daily lives. Staring at a screen all day long affects eye sight, health, and other major things needed to live. Teenagers screen times on their phones and other electronic devices are higher than ever. Adding screens to schools just worsens these young kids mental health. The more screens we add, the less relationships we get to make and experience, the less we get to live life at its fullest.
Me and a group of students at Spring Mills Middle School are working hard to make a change. I hope that you can say that you have supported our cause.
