Keep Palmer Square Park from becoming a de facto parking lot

Keep Palmer Square Park from becoming a de facto parking lot
The Issue
In the heart of Palmer Square in Chicago, we find sanctuary and tranquility in Palmer Square Park. This haven provides respite from the city's hustle and bustle and bears the character of our community, a character we risk losing if the park is transformed into a parking lot.
Palmer Square is a quiet part of the Logan Square neighborhood. Palmer Square Park is a jewel in the city's park system, providing sanctuary and tranquility in the neighborhood. Palmer Square Park is a quiet neighborhood park, with lots of trees, park benches, a jogging path, and a small children's playground.
Alderman LaSpata wants to turn Palmer Square Park into a de facto parking lot. He is pushing forward with plans to add diagonal back-in parking spots all along the park on both the north and south sides. Doing so would fundamentally change the character of a quite neighborhood park and add considerably more car traffic to the area.
Alderman LaSpata has been at work on these parking plans for over 6 MONTHS-- since at least February 2024-- and has not held ONE community meeting on the project with the neighborhood. He has not engaged with the multiple community organization and institutions which call Palmer Square home. He has not engaged with Palmer Square Park Advisory Council, Logan Square Preservation (LSP), the Home Owners Association of Palmer Square (HAPS), or the two churches and one elementary school which are located on the park.
In fact, construction on this plan started on August 19, 2024 with no warning or notice to residents or organizations. Construction crews grinding down our street are how we found out about this work. Residents reached out in large numbers and managed to get the work stopped-- AT LEAST FOR NOW. Let's let Alderman LaSpata know we don't need diagonal parking spots encircling our park. Let's let him know we need TRANSPARENCY and COMMUNITY INPUT and an alderperson who listens to his constituents instead of working around them in the shadows.
Palmer Square is a Park not a Parking lot. NO DIAGONAL PARKING.
