KEEP P!NK AS A UNICEF AMBASSADOR
We are calling on UNICEF to KEEP P!NK as a UNICEF Ambassador.
A petition calling for P!nk’s removal argues that she attacked people calling for an end to the suffering in Gaza, dismissed human-rights advocacy, and is incompatible with UNICEF’s humanitarian mission.
But before deciding whether P!nk should be removed from her role, we should look at what she actually said, the context surrounding her comments, and her documented history of humanitarian work.
When P!nk finally addressed the controversy in her own words, much of the characterization surrounding her had changed significantly from what she actually said.
LET’S LOOK AT WHAT P!NK ACTUALLY SAID
P!nk began by acknowledging her own part in the controversy.
She explained that she had reposted somebody else’s post about Macklemore’s performance and that she did not write the original words and would not have chosen all of them herself.
She acknowledged that responding to the backlash with sarcastic memes had not helped and made an important distinction:
“A repost isn’t a statement, and a meme isn’t a spine.”
Rather than allowing other people’s words to continue being attributed to her, P!nk chose to explain her own position.
And her actual position was considerably more nuanced than the petition calling for her removal suggests.
P!nk stated:
“Of course I don’t speak for Israel, or for any government. I never have.”
She then stated:
“Hamas is a terrorist organization. Palestinians deserve a future that honors their humanity and their aspirations.”
And most importantly:
“Protecting innocent life comes first, everywhere, and nobody should ever celebrate the death of a child. Anybody’s child.”
These are not the words of someone saying Palestinian children do not matter.
These are not the words of someone saying Palestinians do not deserve a future.
And these are not the words of someone saying people should be prevented from advocating for Palestinians.
In fact, P!nk specifically clarified:
“That’s what prompted my repost. Not ‘Free Palestine,’ and not anyone’s right to say it.”
She also said:
“I have never asked for another artist to be silenced and I’m not asking now.”
She went further, saying that she sees those who are frightened, including people who are:
“Jewish or Muslim or Palestinian or Israeli or just tired of all of it.”
P!nk is therefore expressing two concerns simultaneously: concern for Palestinian humanity and innocent life, and concern about fear and antisemitism experienced by Jewish people.
Those positions are not mutually exclusive.
WHAT WAS P!NK ACTUALLY RESPONDING TO?
The controversy began after Macklemore performed at an Ed Sheeran concert and used his platform to advocate for Palestinians, including saying “Free Palestine” and performing his song “Hind’s Hall” while imagery connected to the conflict was shown.
P!nk’s objection, according to her own explanation, was not simply that Macklemore said “Free Palestine.”
She explicitly said that wasn’t what prompted her repost.
Her concern was about the broader presentation and, particularly, how Jewish people in the audience experienced it.
P!nk described herself as a Jewish mother who wanted to be able to say:
“That scared me, and it scared people I love.”
That is a statement about her own experience and perception. People are free to disagree with her interpretation of Macklemore’s performance, but disagreement with that interpretation should not automatically become a claim that she opposes Palestinian rights.
THE 2014 MACKLEMORE INCIDENT ALSO MATTERS
P!nk also explained why Macklemore’s recent performance carried additional significance for her.
In 2014, Macklemore appeared at an event wearing a dark suit, wig, beard and large prosthetic nose. The costume was widely criticized as resembling antisemitic stereotypes of Jewish people.
Macklemore subsequently apologized, stating that portraying a Jewish caricature was not his intention, while acknowledging how the costume could be perceived that way.
P!nk specifically acknowledged that he apologized and said she had let the incident go.
Her point in raising it now was not that Macklemore should permanently be condemned for something he apologized for. Rather, she explained why seeing another controversial performance from someone who had previously been involved in an incident involving Jewish stereotypes affected her personally.
Again, people can disagree with her interpretation.
But disagreement does not justify rewriting what she said.
THE REMOVAL PETITION’S CLAIMS DON’T MATCH HER CLARIFICATION

“ranted against supporters calling for an end to the genocide in Gaza”;
dismissed human-rights advocacy;
failed to show compassion toward Palestinian children;
undermined humanitarian advocacy;
and was incompatible with UNICEF’s values.
But compare those accusations with P!nk’s own words.
The petition says she opposed Palestinian advocacy.
P!nk said her objection was “not ‘Free Palestine,’ and not anyone’s right to say it.”
The petition suggests she dismissed Palestinian humanity.
P!nk said:
“Palestinians deserve a future that honors their humanity and their aspirations.”
The petition suggests she does not sufficiently care about children affected by the conflict.
P!nk said:
“Protecting innocent life comes first, everywhere.”
And:
“Nobody should ever celebrate the death of a child. Anybody’s child.”
The petition portrays her as refusing to acknowledge the suffering of Palestinians.
P!nk explicitly said she has grieved for children “on both sides of that fence.”
These statements don’t mean everyone has to agree with P!nk.
They do mean that any petition seeking to remove her should accurately represent what she actually believes rather than attributing positions to her that she has explicitly rejected.
P!NK’S UNICEF WORK GOES BACK MORE THAN A DECADE
P!nk has been a UNICEF Ambassador since 2015.
This isn’t simply an honorary title that she has never used.
According to UNICEF USA, P!nk traveled to Haiti in 2015 to witness UNICEF’s work firsthand. During that visit she saw programs addressing child malnutrition, infant care, breastfeeding, education and vaccination. She visited a UNICEF-supported health centre and a school and met children benefiting from these programs.
UNICEF describes P!nk as someone who helps raise awareness of its health and nutrition programs and their lifesaving impact on children worldwide.
She has also used her public platform to promote UNICEF initiatives, including International Day of the Girl and UNICEF’s Mother’s Day Gifts That Give Back campaign.
And her involvement has continued beyond social-media posts.
During her 2023 and 2024 Summer Carnival Tours, P!nk placed QR codes at merchandise booths directing fans to UNICEF’s Inspired Gifts program, encouraging donations and purchases supporting children around the world.
Her UNICEF involvement therefore includes field visits, public advocacy and fundraising support.
SHE HAS PERSONALLY SEEN CHILDREN AFFECTED BY POVERTY AND CONFLICT
This makes P!nk’s recent statement about children particularly relevant.
She said:
“I’ve spent a decade as a UNICEF ambassador for kids who didn’t choose the country or the war they were born into.”
She continued by saying she had not simply discussed these children from behind a screen, she had gone to them and held them.

In her recent statement, she referred to standing with gay children, transgender children and their families.
Her advocacy has also included education and freedom of expression.
In 2023, P!nk partnered with PEN America and Books & Books to give away 2,000 books that had appeared on banned-book lists at her Florida concerts. PEN America reported that P!nk wanted to draw attention to the increasing number of book bans, particularly books concerning race, racism, LGBTQ+ people and authors of color.
This was not merely a social-media statement.
She used her concerts and platform to physically distribute books to people attending her shows.
P!NK’S ADVOCACY FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS

There is no requirement that compassion for one group of children requires silence about another.
We can say:
Palestinian children deserve safety.
Israeli children deserve safety.
Jewish people deserve safety from antisemitism.
Muslim people deserve safety from Islamophobia.
Palestinians deserve dignity and a future.
Innocent people should not be targeted.
Children should never be blamed for the actions of governments or armed groups.
None of these principles cancels out another.
P!nk has explicitly expressed several of these principles in her own statement.
CRITICISM IS FAIR. MISREPRESENTATION IS NOT.
Nobody is suggesting that P!nk should be immune from criticism because she is a UNICEF Ambassador.
People can disagree with her.
People can criticize her decision to repost another person’s words.
People can believe she should have responded differently.
People can disagree with her interpretation of Macklemore’s performance.
People can believe that she should say more about Gaza.
Those are legitimate areas for public discussion.
But there is a significant difference between criticizing what P!nk actually said and attributing statements to her that she did not make.

The petition says her comments demonstrate a lack of compassion toward Palestinian children.

The petition invokes UNICEF’s commitment to children.

P!nk is not claiming to have all the answers to one of the world’s most complicated conflicts.
She has explicitly said she is not going to litigate a complex war in an Instagram caption.
What she is asking for is something much simpler:
The ability to say that she is frightened.
The ability to acknowledge antisemitism.
The ability to stand up for Jewish people.
And, at the same time, the ability to recognize the humanity and aspirations of Palestinians and insist that innocent children must be protected.
That isn’t a rejection of humanitarian values.
It is an expression of them.
P!nk has spent years using her platform to advocate for children, hunger relief, education, LGBTQ+ young people, freedom of expression and vulnerable communities. Her UNICEF work includes going to Haiti, seeing humanitarian programs firsthand, speaking publicly about child malnutrition and using her concert platform to encourage support for UNICEF’s work.
She has also been recognized by humanitarian organizations such as Action Against Hunger for her work supporting vulnerable people and fighting

UNICEF’s mission is to advocate for every child.
That includes children who are Palestinian.
That includes children who are Israeli.
That includes children affected by war, poverty, hunger, discrimination and displacement anywhere in the world.
And P!nk has spent years using her voice to advocate for exactly that principle.
