Our campaign is worrying Johnson
What a week! On Monday there was a debate in parliament on whether the NHS should be excluded from trade deals. Then on Thursday, Johnson as new prime minister stated NHS would not be sold off to US. Am I satisfied? (not quite)
Boris Johnson is not exactly known to be a man of his word…
Over the weekend, Trump and Johnson have said they are working on a ‘very substantial’ trade deal. The pharma and healthcare lobby in US are extremely powerful. It will be close to impossible for a trade deal to get through Congress, that doesn’t involve access to our NHS. In this scenario, relying on Johnson’s ‘word’ is foolhardy to say the least.
Furthermore, as we’ve seen in recent years, privatisation of the NHS has many faces. Read this article by Caroline Malloy for more information:
NHS is already on the table. But here's exactly how Trump wants to sharpen the knives
The past week shows that we’re making a difference. Our campaign is putting pressure on politicians, to make the right noises. But that’s not enough. We need action. We need a concrete guarantee.
We are stepping up the campaign, for a binding commitment in law, that our NHS remains a public service, not a bargaining chip – so please KEEP SHARING!
