The Orkney Islands Council is recommending to expand the 30mph zone out of the village of Finstown and into the countryside.

There have been no recorded speed related incidents in the last five years in Finstown as presented in the OIC study.

The 60mph limit will be reduced to 30mph on a stretch of road that is perfectly safe at that speed and is an important overtaking spot. The northside limit of 40mph will be reduced to 30mph. The 30mph limit on the Old Finstown road will be extended. These reductions will have no effect on the speed inside the current 30mph zone and will only cause more speeding issues on roads that are safe at their current limits.

If this agreed it will never revert back and opens the door to further blanket restriced speed limits on the roads of Orkney, rather than fixing the many real road safety issues that exist.
