Keep Music Events in Proper Venues in Menlyn to Protect Residential Areas from Noise
The Issue
I've been running a B&B peacefully until recently when events in the area, particularly one with relentless noise levels, started causing havoc. A recent event had a soundstage just 200 meters from my establishment. Many guests, overwhelmed by the constant barrage of sound, left early, forcing me to issue refunds. The noise was so intense that it induced anxiety, a common effect of noise pollution, for my guests and myself.
The root of this problem lies with the Tshwane Municipality. The official responsible for signing off licenses for these events allows noise levels higher than international standards. Such authorization, for events lasting up to 12 hours, demonstrates a blatant disregard for the residents and businesses in the vicinity.
Facts:
- 3 events since 28 Feb 2026.
- 12 hour back to back live performances.
- Baseline and drums so loud that it rattled the windows and crockery inside the house.
- The noise measured on a unofficial noise meter indivated levels up to 72dB (municipal bylaws indicate 55dB. )
- Excessive cursing and bad language by the artists.
- Showing no respects for other cultures and religions on Easter Sunday.
Noise pollution doesn't just cause temporary discomfort; it affects mental health, quality of life, and has a direct economic impact on local businesses like mine. International research highlights that prolonged exposure to excessive noise can lead to increased stress levels, sleep disturbances, and cardiovascular diseases.
We need accountability and stricter regulations. The municipality must review and revise their criteria for event licenses. They should include restrictions on noise levels that align with global standards and implement measures that prioritize community well-being.
I urge the community and those who value peace and mental health to join me in demanding change. Let's make Tshwane a place where businesses can thrive without the overshadowing threat of disruptive, unregulated noise. Please sign this petition to hold the responsible parties accountable and to safeguard our community against future noise pollution.
