I am writing as a current senior at Valley Stream Central High School on behalf of many students, parents, and community members who are deeply upset about the way our beloved principal, Ms. Hugee, is being removed from her position.

On a random Tuesday, an email was sent to students and families announcing that someone else would be taking over as principal. The email predominantly praised the incoming administrator, leaving out crucial information and acknowledgment regarding Ms. Hugee and the transformative work she has done for our school and community.

Ms. Hugee has been a steadfast figure at Valley Stream Central, showing unparalleled dedication and commitment to not only improving the academic standards of our school but also fostering an inclusive and nurturing environment. Her leadership has led to measurable improvements in student performance and boosted morale among students and faculty alike.

The abrupt and seemingly unceremonious manner of her removal feels unjust and dismissive of everything she has accomplished. Moreover, the lack of transparency and communication regarding this decision has left many in our community questioning the motives and fairness of the school district’s actions.

I do not want to see a bad thing happen to a good person who genuinely cares about the community she represents. Ms. Hugee deserves better than to be sidelined without a proper acknowledgment of her contributions and an open dialogue about the changes being made.

We propose that the school board and district administration reconsider their decision, engage with the community to provide more context, and above all, reinstate Ms. Hugee as principal. Such an action would not only restore trust in the decision-making process but also affirm the district’s commitment to their values of integrity, respect, and community engagement.
