Keep Mr. Thomas at Fountain Valley High School

The Issue

Due to the lack of students for the current number of staff, amazing teachers at Fountain Valley High School, such as Mr. Thomas, are being laid off.

Mr. Thomas is an exceptionally caring and thoughtful teacher. The commitment he has to his students is above and beyond and I believe we need him and more teachers like him on our staff. While many teachers do their jobs well, Mr. Thomas with his extraordinary efforts and interactions with students makes his teaching stand out. The length of his teaching career shouldn’t overshadow the positive impact he has made on the school and their students.

Mr. Thomas is the teacher that has, and will always be there for everyone. Every single one of his students, current or past, has nothing but praise for his passion for teaching and involvement in student lives. He makes his classroom environment a safe space for anyone. One of his main priorities as an educator is to ensure his classroom is welcoming and inclusive, something I’ve never seen emphasized in other classrooms.  Everytime there was a baron playday or mental health week, he would offer his own class time to send us to these activities. Though this could be seen as an act some teachers do to get students out of their classroom for a short time, Mr. Thomas often joins us outside in the activities and motivates us to actually participate. He also takes the time to learn about his students individually, their names, extracurriculars, and sometimes even shows up to sport events to support us. He makes sure to note on each students weaknesses and strengths, and giving us assignments or personal feedback to improve these aspects in our education. And rather than just giving our criticism, he is open to taking criticism as well. He is consistently seeking ways to improve his teaching and always making sure to survey our class. Whether it’s adjusting due dates or completely rewriting a slide show, he tries to improve himself for the sake of our education.
