Keep Milwaukee's vintage warning sirens operating

The Issue

In Milwaukee, the city’s outdoor warning siren system is cherished by many siren enthusiasts including myself. These rare civil defense sirens, primarily from the 1970s and 1980s, form a unique part of the city's history. These sirens have not only served as vital life-saving tools but also as historical artifacts that resonate deeply with enthusiasts and others alike.

For those of us passionate about these mechanical wonders, the most of these are dual-tone sirens which are particularly liked more than single tone sirens, They emit two distinct frequencies simultaneously, providing an unmistakable sound that is recognized and adhered to in emergencies compared to a single tone siren. Among them, the Alerting Communicators Of America Penetrator-50 siren stands out, known as the second loudest siren in the world at 135 decibels at 100 feet and is 8/12 port dual tone, and the P-50s make up most of Milwaukee's system not to mention the insane and terrifying echoes and ambiance they have. Such features not only highlight engineering prowess but also assure robust performance during critical warnings. even the city has one of the rarest sirens in the whole world and it is the only active one that is also still standing on earth which is the Alerting Communicators Of America Hurricane 130 MK2 which is 130 decibels at 100 ft, unfortunately the roots blower on it is starting to fail but the actual siren itself works just fine, While most sirens draw in air from the intake though natural aspiration, the ACA Hurricane instead forces a high volume of compressed air into the chopper through the use of a belt-driven Roots-type positive displacement rotary lobe blower. By greatly increasing the pressure and volume of air through the chopper, the blower greatly amplifies the siren's sound output. The blower is an off-the-shelf 4012-series MD Pneumatics unit which are luckily still being made till this day and hopefully the city can order a new one so it runs great again this siren is 8/10 port dual tone while some other ACA siren models in Milwaukee are 9/12 port dual tone and a very old 1940s Biersach & Niedermeyer Company Mobil Directo siren is 8 port single tone but still cool and very very rare.

These sirens are more than just functional machines; they are vibrant links to our past, reminding us of a time when technology was as much about durability and distinctive design as it was about utility. The city of Milwaukee's is beginning the process to replace these old sirens even though most of them actually work fine and it is easier to do maintenance and repair them instead of buying whole new sirens which costs more and it raises concern among me and other enthusiasts and who see their removal as a loss in an iconic siren system within the siren community, and unfortunetly the P-50 on the Milwaukee County Courthouse has been replaced with a newer siren and this is only the start, my grandma lives by a ACA P-50 and it is at a tennis court by her home and sadly a new siren that is 128 decibels and not 135 decibels at 100 ft is replacing it and is now standing waiting to be wired up once the P-50 is removed.

Thus, we urge the city of Milwaukee to commit to preserving these rare outdoor sirens until they are inoperable beyond repair. Regular maintenance should be performed to keep them operational, allowing current and future generations to appreciate both their utility and their historical significance.

By signing this petition, you support the continued operation and maintenance of Milwaukee County's vintage civil defense sirens, ensuring they remain a part of the city until they naturally reach the end of their working lives then they can replace them with newer sirens. Lets preserve these rare and loud sirens for as long as possible.
