Keep Mav Time!

The Issue

Recently at Emerson High School, things have been changed to align with the Texas Education Agency laws. One major change is “Mav Time”, an advisory period that has been removed because it affected the other instructional periods, making them 85 minutes instead of 90. Mav Time is a free/study hall period for students and occasionally it is also when teachers go over school required presentations. It can be a useful time for students to wind down, relax, or get a little extra work done. Many students at Emerson are very disappointed by the removal of Mav Time and greatly want to keep this period. However, changes will have to be made whether we keep or remove Mav Time. If Mav Time were to be kept, the advisory would have to be shorter, but it will still be there.

If Mav Time were to be removed, many inconveniences could arise because Emerson has been following this schedule for years. Examples include pep rallies and other school events in Emerson. However, if we were to keep this period we could avoid conflicts. It is also similar to the schedule students have been following since the school opened, just slightly adjusted.

Emerson has been operating like this for a while, and students are already used to how the bell schedule is formatted. To add on, having the same teacher/people for all 4 years could build connection, not just from student to student but also student to teacher. Even though Mav Time would have to be shortened in order to be in compliance with the state law, it’s better than no Mav Time at all. If we want to keep Mav Time, there’s no better way to say it then right now!
