Keep ICHS Students Warm: Allow Coats and Hats Indoors

The Issue

Ilford often experiences very cold winters, making it hard for students to stay warm. Recently, temperatures have dropped to as low as -1°C, yet students at Ilford County High School are still not allowed to wear coats or hats inside the school buildings or classrooms.

This petition focuses on something very basic: keeping students warm, healthy, and able to learn. It is well known that being in a cold environment makes it harder to concentrate, stay focused, and perform well in lessons. When students are shivering or uncomfortable, their learning suffers. On top of that, being exposed to low temperatures without proper clothing increases the chance of getting sick, including common illnesses like colds and the flu.

In addition to the cold weather outside, many students have reported that some classrooms in the school are not properly heated. These rooms become extremely cold during lessons, making it even harder for students to focus and stay comfortable. When heating doesn’t work or isn’t strong enough, allowing coats and hats becomes even more important to make sure students can learn without being distracted by the cold.

Allowing students to wear coats and hats indoors during cold weather is a simple and practical solution. It would help keep them comfortable, support their health, and make it easier for them to concentrate in class. Many other schools in areas with similar weather have already made this change and found it helpful for their students. We are asking the Ilford County High School administration to reconsider their current policy. Letting students wear coats and hats inside—especially during very cold weather—is not just about comfort. It shows care for their well-being and supports their ability to learn in a healthy environment.

Please sign this petition to support this important change and help ensure that all students at Ilford County High School can learn in a warm, safe, and supportive setting.
