Keep Home Office jobs in Southport
Keep Home Office jobs in Southport
The Issue
Protect Jobs, Families and Southport's Future
We, the undersigned, call on the Government and the relevant departments to halt the proposed relocation of General Register Office (GRO) and Passport Office work from Smedley Hydro, Southport, and commit to keeping these vital jobs in our town.
Smedley Hydro is one of Southport's largest and most important employers. The hundreds of staff who work there not only provide essential public services but also help support the local economy. Their wages sustain local shops, cafés, transport providers, and businesses throughout the town.
The proposed relocation threatens the livelihoods of dedicated public servants and risks causing significant economic harm to Southport. For many employees, moving to another location is simply not practical. Increased travel costs, longer commuting times, childcare commitments, caring responsibilities, and family circumstances mean that relocation could force many experienced staff to leave their jobs.
A recent PCS survey found that 89% of staff want their work to remain in Southport. Many workers rely on local family support networks for childcare, transport, and caring responsibilities. Removing these jobs would disrupt lives, place additional pressures on families, and weaken an already fragile local economy.
When major employers leave a town, the effects are felt far beyond the workplace. Local businesses lose customers, employment opportunities decline, and communities face long-term economic and social challenges. Southport should not be asked to bear these unnecessary consequences.
We believe:
GRO and Passport Office work should remain in Southport.
The experience and expertise of the existing workforce must be valued and retained.
The economic impact on Southport should be fully considered before any relocation decision is made.
Workers, trade unions, local stakeholders, and the community should be properly consulted.
The Government should invest in Southport's future, not remove jobs from it.
Our Message
Southport's workforce has delivered vital public services with dedication and professionalism for generations. We stand with the staff at Smedley Hydro and call on decision-makers to protect these jobs, support local families, and safeguard the future of our town.
