Keep Historic Reservoir Rd/Rochambeau Trail on July 15th

The Issue

Reservoir Rd./Rochambeau Trail is a significant part of Newtown's history, tracing back to the Revolutionary War. It is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, and as such, is one of Newtown's most valuable historical assets. What makes our historic road so special, is that it is one of very few sections between RI and VA where the Washington-Rochambeau Trail and the 18th centrury landscape around it, remain undisturbed.

A developer has asked our Board of Selectmen for a discontinuance vote on July 15th, and they agreed to the vote. He needs the road to be discontinued in order to maximize his profits by building 117 cluster homes, with some a mere 75 feet from this historical treasure, with some yards cleared right to the edge of it.

Ceding ownership, control and oversight of our public, historic asset to a private developer, without first fully understanding what's in it for the town, would be an irresponsible dereliction of duty. Such a rushed decision would erase an important piece of our past and diminish the cultural landscape of our community.

It would be premature to discontinue our historic road  before proper evaluations on the entire property have been done. July 15th does not give the BOS enough time to consult with town and Borough commissions, or local, state and federal experts and stakeholders...including neighbors. July 15th does not give the BOS enough time to understand the irreversible impacts of their decision.

As we approach the 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary War, we should be celebrating the important role Newtown played in declaring our nation's independence....not discontinuing it.

Please help protect this invaluable asset for future generations by signing this petition, and ask your friends, family and neighbors to as well.

Thank you.
