The Trump administration is quietly rolling back crucial protections, making it easier for people with criminal records to own guns again. 

The Justice Department is restoring gun rights to multiple individuals with criminal convictions, including actor Mel Gibson, who pleaded no contest to battery in a domestic violence case.

These are not minor infractions. Domestic violence is a key predictor of future violence, including deadly shootings. Research has shown that when abusers have access to firearms, the risk of homicide increases exponentially. Yet, this administration is opening the door for such individuals to be armed once again.

This is not just about one person. The administration’s push to loosen gun restrictions for convicted criminals signals a dangerous shift in policy, one that undermines decades of efforts to keep firearms out of the hands of those who pose a threat to others.

Attorney General Pam Bondi has already approved these changes, disregarding serious concerns from career Justice Department officials who were fired after opposing this move.

We cannot sit by as gun safety laws are dismantled in favor of political favors and special interests. Lives are at stake. We demand that the Justice Department immediately reverse these actions and uphold the restrictions that have long protected our communities.
