The Issue

Flock Safety is an Atlanta based surveillance company founded in 2017 that has now expanded into a national security empire. With 104,866 of these cameras currently in operation, here’s what they aren’t telling you. Flock cameras are currently used all across the country to track the movement of cars through license plate readers, track people through AI facial recognition software, and connect this data to personal information such as residence, family, and even personal medical information. However, Flock Safety has come under the most fire for collaborating with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), who use their sophisticated AI tracking software to monitor immigrants and conduct illegal traffic stops and raids. While these cameras are usually operated by municipalities, the Shaker Heights, Ohio police department say that their databases have been tapped by federal and out of state agencies, including ICE. So far, there are only 69 cities in the US that have either put a moratorium on or cancelled/rejected contracts with Flock, or deactivated their cameras all together. Sadly, the Hudson Valley has not yet taken that step. With 1 camera in Catskill, 6 in the Town of Ulster, and 3 in The City of Kingston, it’s safe to say that your movements have already been tracked to some degree if you travel locally. With reported ICE activity at our doorsteps in these areas since Donald Trump took office in 2025, there is no time to wait. We must protect our neighbors and say no to the installation of any Flock Cameras in Saugerties before we are tracked by federal agencies in our own backyard. This is why Flock Off Saugerties is calling on the Saugerties Town Board (Bill Barr, Stephanie Bassler, Fred Costello, Mike Ivino, and Leanne Thornton), to pass an indefinite moratorium on any contract with Flock Security, to protect our privacy, and the safety of Saugerties’ most vulnerable residents. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Firstly, you can sign this petition. The voices of hundreds, if not thousands of Saugertisians have power when we speak together, and the Town Board will hear our message that we reject Mass Surveillance in our town. In addition, the Saugerties Government website (https://saugertiesny.gov/boards/town-board has the email addresses and phone numbers of every member of the Town Board, and we encourage you to send each one an email, or make a phone call to voice your opposition against any contract with Flock Security. Lastly, showing up to a Town Board meeting and voicing your opinion during public comment periods. Organizing in person will without a doubt be the most effective way to ensure our message gets across. If you are against ICE, Mass Surveillance, or the Federal Government knowing your every move, please join us in asking the Saugerties Town Government in passing an indefinite moratorium on Flock Cameras. The People United can never be Defeated.
