The Issue

Dr. Wilson has been an integral part of our UMass community and his contributions to the Classics Department are unparalleled. As students, we have had the privilege of being part of his dynamic lectures that not only educate but inspire us to explore new areas of study. His passion for teaching and genuine dedication to our academic growth have made a lasting impact on many of us.

Dr. Wilson is more than just an educator; he is a mentor who truly cares about the success and well-being of his students. His approachable nature and willingness to go the extra mile make him a beloved figure in our academic journey. It's not uncommon to see him engaging with students outside class, offering guidance, and fostering a vibrant learning environment that extends beyond the classroom.

However, despite his overwhelming positive influence, Dr. Wilson's continued employment is not guaranteed beyond the end of the Spring 2026 semester. This news has left many of us concerned for the future of the Classics Department. The absence of his expertise and unique approach to teaching would leave a significant void that would be difficult to fill.

In retaining Dr. Wilson, the College of Humanities & Fine Arts will continue to benefit from a valued asset that inspires interdisciplinary studies particularly with the College of Social & Behavioral Science's Anthropology Department. We strongly urge the university administration to recognize the invaluable contributions of Dr. Wilson and reconsider extending his contract and/or enter into negotiations for the long-term. By doing so, they will not only support the flourishing of the Classics Department but also reaffirm their commitment to providing a high-quality education that fosters continued interdisciplinary studies.

Please sign this petition to help us keep Dr. Wilson as a pivotal faculty member of UMass Amherst. His impact is immeasurable, and together, we can advocate for his continued presence in our academic lives. Sign today for the future of the Classics Department and its students!

Sincerely,

Current UMass students and alumni.
