The Issue

The RCP-UBC has been denied club status. Help us keep communism on campus!

The RCP has been extensively involved in student activism as an official AMS club since 2022. We spearheaded the student strike for Palestine in 2024, and helped to organize and lead the protest that kicked One-BC off of campus in January 2026. Now we are being bureaucratically blocked from organizing on campus.

While the AMS recently reduced its clubs cap citing budgetary concerns (we’ve never taken a dime of AMS money), there is likely a political motivation as well. This censorship is part of a broader trend of repression of campus activism across the country. The federal government recently published the “Campus Antisemitism and Student Experiences” report, which paints pro-Palestinian activism as threatening Jewish students’ safety. Furthermore, an investigation by The Breach found that UBC conspired with 30 other Canadian universities and police to suppress pro-Palestinian student activism. It's likely that the AMS has been pressured by UBC to block radical political groups, and if so this represents a threat to all student organizing.

There is a thirst for communist ideas at UBC. In February 2026, despite not being an official club, the RCP-UBC was invited to participate in a debate between political clubs. We were enthusiastically received, and several AMS figures commented that we won the debate. Clearly, communism has a place at UBC! Now we are fighting to regain our official club status so we can organize events large enough for all the students interested in our ideas.

At the end of September, we will march to the AMS office and present them with the petition signatures and all necessary club documents. If you want to keep communism on campus, sign our petition!
