The issue
For many years now, I have been using and wholeheartedly recommending the crèches provided by the City of Greater Geelong (COGG) Council at Leisurelink, Splashdown, BASC, and Norlane ARC. As a General Practitioner, I have always pointed new parents and families to these wonderful facilities, assuring them of the exceptional care provided for their children while they attend to their personal well-being. I started doing this even before becoming a mother myself, and now, as a parent, I deeply appreciate the profound impact these crèches have had on my family.
These crèches are not just daycares; they are lifelines for working parents, single mothers, and families who rely on these services to find a moment of respite, knowing their children are in safe, caring environments. They embody the spirit of community support and offer opportunities for social interaction that are crucial for both children’s and parents' mental health and well-being.
The proposal to close these crèches will devastate many families in our community. It threatens to remove affordable and accessible childcare options that residents depend on. For working parents, the closure means choosing between their jobs or overseeing their children, a choice no family should have to make.
Statistics show that affordable childcare increases workforce participation, reduces gender inequality, and supports local economies. This is not just an issue for individual families; it affects the entire fabric of our society by potentially putting more pressure on other public services and reducing productivity.
We understand that budget constraints may be a consideration in this decision, yet the cost of closing these facilities could outweigh the savings in terms of social impact. Instead, we urge the Council to explore alternative funding options, partnerships with local businesses, or even implementing a sliding scale fee structure to keep these invaluable resources open.
Help us preserve these essential services for the Greater Geelong community. Please sign this petition to urge the COGG council to keep our much-needed crèches open and accessible for everyone.
