Keep Bradford West Gwillimbury Library a Conflict Free Zone

Keep Bradford West Gwillimbury Library a Conflict Free Zone
The Issue
Dear Matthew Corbett,
We are writing to express our deep concerns regarding the recent decision to rent out the Zima room within the West Gwillimbury Public Library to host an event supporting the conflict in the Middle East. While we understand the library's commitment to fostering an inclusive environment, this decision raises several issues that need careful consideration.
1. Misuse of Taxpayer's Funds: As concerned taxpayers, we are troubled by the potential misuse of public funds for events that involve external conflicts rather than directly contributing to the welfare of our local community. Public resources must be allocated judiciously to benefit the immediate needs and interests of the residents.
2. Potential Incitement of Antisemitism: Hosting events supporting the Middle East conflict may inadvertently incite anti-Semitic sentiments within our community. It is crucial to ensure that public spaces remain neutral, foster unity and understanding rather than contributing to the
polarization of diverse groups within our community.
3. Deprivation of Safety, Inclusion, and Belonging: Allowing events related to an external conflict may compromise the feeling of safety among our children within the library premises. The library is a space where children should feel secure and free from the potential tensions associated with
global conflicts. Our responsibility is to create an environment that nurtures their intellectual curiosity in a safe and peaceful setting.
4. Relevance to Local Issues: The decision to host events supporting the Middle East conflict seems disconnected from the immediate concerns of the Canadian community. Libraries play a pivotal role in addressing local issues, promoting education, and fostering community development.
Engaging in matters outside of Canada may divert resources and attention from addressing the pressing needs of our residents.
5. Lack of Contribution to Community Development and Outreach: Hosting events related to the Middle East conflict may not align with the library's mission of contributing to community development and outreach. It is crucial to prioritize initiatives that directly benefit our community's diverse population and enhance the library's role as a hub for education, cultural exchange, and collaboration.
In addition, renting out the Zima room to show this movie contradicts the library's Diversity Statement, specifically on the following points:
Commitment to a Celebration of Diversity: The decision to host events supporting the Middle East conflict may inadvertently undermine the library's commitment to celebrating diversity within our community. Upholding the principles of inclusivity and respect for all perspectives is essential.
Space to Foster Acceptance: Libraries should serve as spaces that foster acceptance and understanding among individuals of diverse backgrounds. Hosting events related to a contentious international conflict may hinder the library's role as a safe haven for open dialogue and mutual respect.
Eradicate Systematic Racism: The library's commitment to eradicating systemic racism should be reflected in its activities and events. Hosting events that could potentially contribute to the spread of prejudice and discrimination goes against the library's mission to eliminate systemic racism within our community.
In conclusion, we kindly request that the library reconsider its decision and assess the potential impact on the community. Redirecting resources towards initiatives that directly contribute to the well-being and
development of our local community will better serve the library's mission and values.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. We trust the library will continue to be a beacon of knowledge, inclusivity, and community engagement.
Sincerely,
The Jewish Bradford Association
