The Issue

School should be the safest place in any community. But on January 7, at the end of the school day at Roosevelt High School in south Minneapolis, Border Patrol agents came onto campus as students were leaving. According to a legal claim filed this week, one of the school's own staff members ended up pinned face-down in the snow.

Quentin Williams, a special education assistant students know as "Mr. Q," was helping with dismissal when agents who had followed a driver to the school spread out across the grounds. His claim says administrators asked the agents to leave, and that Williams raised his hands to show he posed no threat. Instead, the claim alleges, agents tackled him, pressed on his neck and back until he struggled to breathe, and arrested him. A felony assault charge against him was later reduced, then dismissed in March.

Williams says he filed the claim "for the sake of keeping agents off school grounds, and just making sure it doesn't happen again to anyone," according to Sahan Journal.

Whatever someone believes about immigration policy, students and school staff shouldn't have to face armed enforcement operations in the place they go to learn. Parents of every background expect their kids to come home safe at the end of the day.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), should adopt a clear policy keeping its agents off K–12 school property except in true emergencies. Congress should then write that protection into law so it lasts no matter who is in charge.
