Keep Bedminster Green a Local Green Space

Keep Bedminster Green a Local Green Space
The Issue
As a resident of Bedminster, Bristol, UK, I am deeply concerned about the future of our beloved local green spaces: Bedminster Green and the riverside walk between Windmill Hill and St John’s Lane.
Bedminster Green and the riverside walk have each been designated as 'local green space', but this status is under threat in the forthcoming local plan. We are urging the city council to retain this designation of a Local Green Space for Bedminster Green.
These areas are not just patches of grass and some trees; they are key to our community and each is a green oasis within the urban environment. They are key green spaces between Windmill Hill and town centre supporting a range of animals and plants. Many locals, including myself, encounter this serene spot on a daily basis - passing through or pausing to appreciate their trees and wildlife.
Moreover, we believe that there's more than meets the eye in terms of biodiversity at Bedminster Green and on the riverside walk. Therefore, we request that a comprehensive biodiversity study using BNG 4.0 methodology be undertaken by competent authorities, and that the new Local Plan retain these spaces as 'Local Green Space' and not downgrade them.
The importance of such spaces in urban areas cannot be overstated – they serve as vital components in maintaining ecological biodiversity while also contributing significantly towards mental health benefits for residents (source: World Health Organisation). Furthermore, these spaces can act as stepping stones for wildlife moving across cities (source: Royal Society for Protection of Birds).
By protecting and better understanding the unique environment at Bedminster Green through study, we can ensure that it continues to add value as part of a green infrastructure network.
Let us stand together to protect something valued by our community – sign this petition today!
