To every person who signed this petition,

I would like to thank you for signing the petition and demonstrating how important these local spaces are to the community and how valuable the plants and animals that we share our city with are within the neighbourhood. This petition has been more successful than I have ever imagined it would be, and your support has helped the community in important ways:

As well as showing the council that we care about this space its trees and the impact it has on the local area it has also been passed to the planning inspectorate as evidence that this green space should remain with a high level of protection from development.

It has allowed a new group the friends of Bedminster Green to demonstrate there is support for these green spaces and they are currently applying for recognition from the city council.  This will allow them to obtain funding to improve the amenity facilities on the green.

Unfortunately, one of the applications that would see trees removed from the green is now going to the planning committee on Wednesday 5 June.  This application would see the river opened-up and several trees removed to form the channel.  The reason this is being done is to provide flood alleviation for developments around the green which will also plunge the green into shadow.  Details can be found here:

https://pa.bristol.gov.uk/online-applications/simpleSearchResults.do?action=firstPage

Among other impacts, application 23/00611/FB will see:

  • Trees cut down in an air quality management area with no on-site replacement,
  • The newly opened channel will be divided from the soil to prevent contamination from the green running in, but there will still be a risk of run off into the channel during any flood events,
  • A key part of the green infrastructure network around the local neighbourhood will be diminished.

Several local residents will be going to the committee meeting to argue for the protection of the green and we would love your support if you would like to help further.

The meeting is on Wednesday 05 June at 2pm at City Hall, to submit a statement to the committee email it to:

democratic.services@bristol.gov.uk by 12 noon on Tuesday 4th June.

Include the application number (above) and your name.   You can also ask to present your statement to the committee and read about it, if you wish to do so, please let them know in your email.

More details about writing a statement can be found here:
