Keep Bangalow Showground in Community Hands
The issue

We, the undersigned, call on the NSW Government to reconsider the decision to appoint Byron Shire Council as Crown Land Manager of the Bangalow Showground and to reinstate the Bangalow Parks Trust Inc as its manager.
The Bangalow Showground has been managed by the Bangalow Parks Trust continuously since 1947. For almost 80 years, the Trust has cared for this important community asset without ongoing financial support from Crown Lands or Byron Shire Council.
Following an extensive internal review, council staff recommended the Bangalow Parks Trust as the preferred management option, with the Trust transitioning to a direct relationship with Crown Lands following a Byron Shire Council resolution in August 2025.
This decision will put the future of community events and organisations at risk.
Of particular concern is the potential increase in fees, charges and operating costs associated with the Showground being managed by Byron Shire Council.
These increased costs could make the Showground financially unviable for the very community organisations and events it exists to support.
Long-standing events such as the Bangalow Show could face significant difficulty continuing to operate, while community organisations such as the Bangalow Pony Club could find the cost of using their traditional home simply unaffordable.
This isn't just about who manages the Showground. It is about whether our community can continue to afford to use it.
The Bangalow Showground is a vital community hub used by sporting clubs, equestrian groups, agricultural organisations, community groups, major local events and generations of families.
The Bangalow Parks Trust has demonstrated that a locally managed, community-focused model can successfully maintain the Showground while keeping it accessible to the organisations that depend upon it.
We do not want to see increased costs gradually price community groups and events out of Bangalow Showground.
We therefore call on Minister Stephen Kamper and the NSW Government to reconsider the appointment of Byron Shire Council as Crown Land Manager and reinstate the Bangalow Parks Trust Inc as the manager of Bangalow Showground.
