We call on the UK Government to introduce Katie Beth’s Law, requiring all unexplained or potentially suspicious deaths to receive a full forensic examination within 24 hours, with blood samples taken and preserved immediately upon arrival at the mortuary.

Katie Beth Beattie was just 27 years old when she died in July 2024.

Katie was autistic and had faced mental health challenges that had, at times, led to struggles with alcohol addiction. She was recognised as a highly vulnerable adult. But above all, Katie was a daughter, a sister, a friend, and a deeply loved member of her family. She deserved dignity, compassion, and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her suspicious death.

Katie was found deceased at her home address, unclothed and with injuries and bruising to her body, a needle puncture point later discovered by family at the mortuary between her toes. Despite these concerning circumstances, her death was not treated as suspicious and a timely forensic examination was not carried out.

Police were aware that CCTV footage showed a visitor had remained at Katie’s home for a significant period of time before her death. Despite this information, crucial investigative opportunities were lost.

It was only after Katie’s family raised concerns about an injury they discovered at the mortuary that a forensic examination was finally ordered—nine days after Katie had died. By then, vital evidence had deteriorated and blood samples had clotted, making it impossible for toxicologists to determine how Katie died.

As a result, His Majesty’s Coroner was unable to establish Katie’s cause of death, recording:

“Katie Beth Beattie was found deceased on 1 July 2024 at her home address. It has not been possible on the available evidence to determine how Ms Beattie came by her death.”

No family should ever have to endure the devastation of losing a loved one while also facing the possibility that opportunities to uncover the truth were lost because evidence was not preserved in time.

If Katie had not initially been discriminated against because of her mental health history, we believe the delay in taking blood samples and conducting her post-mortem examination would have been minimal.

The introduction of Katie Beth’s Law would help prevent this failure from happening again by making the collection of blood samples mandatory upon arrival at the mortuary. This would ensure that vital evidence is preserved, protecting both the integrity of investigations and the pursuit of justice.

A person’s mental health history, disability, addiction, or vulnerability should never diminish the urgency, compassion, or thoroughness of the response they receive. Every life has equal value, and every family deserves answers.

We are therefore calling on the Prime Minister and the UK Government to introduce Katie Beth’s Law, ensuring that:

  • All unexplained or potentially suspicious deaths receive a full forensic examination within 24 hours of discovery.
  • Blood samples are taken and preserved immediately upon arrival at the mortuary to ensure accurate toxicology testing.
  • Vital forensic evidence is protected before it can deteriorate or be lost.
  • Investigators have the best possible opportunity to identify anyone who may have contributed to a person’s death.
  • Coroners have access to accurate evidence to help determine the cause of death. This includes viewing scene and post mortem photographs and any police body worn camera footage if available.
  • Families are spared unnecessary delays, uncertainty, and the lifelong pain of unanswered questions.
  • Every individual is treated equally, with dignity and respect, regardless of their medical history or personal circumstances.

Her life mattered. The truth matters. Katie matters.

Please sign this petition to support Katie Beth’s Law and help ensure that no other family is left without answers when timely action could make all the difference. Your support can help create lasting change.
