The Issue

Reduction of taxes – does not fix the cost of electricity

In last week’s Speech of the Throne, the Wynne Government announced a plan to reduce taxes on the  price of electricity paid by consumers but failed to  fix the cost of electricity.

Wynne offered no solution to fix the root cause of the problem identified by the provincial Auditor-General, Bonnie Lysyk in her December  2015 Report. Lysyk wrote that Ontarians had paid a whopping $37 billion more than market value for electricity between 2006 and 2014 and that, by continuing to pay above-market rates for energy generated from renewable sources, the cost of electricity will continue to increase.

The Association to Protect Amherst Island (APAI) advised  the Premier and her new Minister of Energy, Glenn Thibeault ,  that Ontarians  could save  a minimum of $500 Million (half  a billion) over the next 20 years by instructing the Independent Electricity System Operator to cancel without penalty a wind energy contract with Windlectric Inc., a company that cannot achieve its commercial operation date. APAI wrote to the IESO Chair and Board Members: http://www.protectamherstisland.ca/apai-calls-ieso-board-cancel-windlectric-contract-save-500-million/

How can $500Million be saved? This 26 wind turbine, 75 MW- Feed-In- Tariff project was approved in 2011; The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change issued a Renewable Energy Approval (REA) in 2015 but construction has not started; according to the company’s CEO, the project cannot be completed until 2018.  Minister Glen Murray has the authority to revoke the approval and save $500 Million and APAI has appealed to him to do so.

Amherst Island is the canary in the coal mine. Across the channel in Lake Ontario, the 2100 MW Lennox Generating Station sits idle most of the time next to the currently under construction Napanee Gas Plant  moved from Oakville) with another possible  supply of 900 MW.  Intermittent, expensive, and unnecessary power from wind turbines generating 75 MW on Amherst Island is absolutely not needed.

Rick Conroy described the cruel and Kafkaesque situation of Amherst Island in the Wellington Times:  See: http://www.protectamherstisland.ca/the-end-of-reason/

Request the Ontario Government to save $500 MILLION by revoking the Amherst Island REA.
